PORT VLP Academic Integrity Policy
PORT VLP  takes the academic integrity and authenticity of student work very seriously.  It is crucial that students do, submit, protect their own work, and properly give credit to sources used that is not their original work.
As defined by Merriam-Webster.com, integrity is “firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values.”  Academically, students must avoid misconduct that violates the academic integrity principles.  These violations may include plagiarizing, cheating, copying, and falsifying information.  Academic dishonesty may include, but is not limited to:
  • Using cell phones or other electronic devices to message content
  • Using unauthorized sources, “cheat sheets,” references, and other content.
  • Copying others’ work and using it as their own without citing authorship
  • Sharing quizzes, tests, or assignments answers with other students
  • Failing to cite sources effectively, in-text, and providing full references
  • Creating false references
How to Avoid Academic Dishonesty
Trust and honesty emphasize the values of integrity, fairness, respect, and responsibility.  PORT VLP expects you to demonstrate intellectual and individual honesty in preparing for and undertaking in-person and online assessments, tests and quizzes, and when submitting assignments.
Students SHOULD...
  • Complete and turn in original work, use authorized resources, and appropriately cite sources of content used.
  • Know your class syllabus and seek clarification from teachers regarding expectations, policies and assignments that are unclear.
  • Unless indicated by your teacher, work independently on each assignment, and seek help from your teacher when needed.
  • Plan to complete your assignments in a timely manner to avoid incidents of rushing.  Poor time management is not an excuse for plagiarism.
  • Avoid sharing assignments and answers with others. If a classmate needs help, refer that classmate to teacher office hours, or help without sharing your content.

  • When completing an assignment, keep track of sources and websites in order to properly cite sources.  Paraphrasing or summarizing someone else’s content will still need to be cited.
  • Be cautious not to share answers or content in in-person or online formal assessments, quizzes and tests.  Follow testing protocol to avoid the impression of cheating.  This includes turning off cell phones and not opening other online links.

Responses to evidence of Plagiarism/Academic Dishonesty

  • 2nd offense - Formal Warning (BCPSS Code of Conduct Infraction Level 2): The student receives a zero on the assignment.  The assignment can be made up for partial credit (to a maximum of 60%), and parents/guardians and school-based administrators will be notified.

3rd offense - Formal Reprimand (BCPSS Code of Conduct Infraction Level 2): The student receives a zero on the assignment, and the assignment cannot be made up for credit in alignment with the BCPS Code of Conduct for Academic Dishonesty (801.1).  Parents/guardians, school-based administrators, and the student’s other teachers will be notified
